È un opale idrofano naturale, che assorbe acqua e si autoregola l'umidità interna, non richiede trattamenti e mantiene la sua integrità una volta asciutto, salvo sbalzi intensi di temperatura. A differenza degli opali non idrofani , spesso instabili e trattati con olio, l’opale secco è altamente apprezzato per il taglio e per la gioielleria di alto livello.
